About the Owner

Ian Berghoffer
Family’s Choice Care Adult Family Home is privately owned and operated, with the Main House managed by Ian Berghoffer. A former Marine who served for six years, Ian earned his Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) from Lake Washington Institute of Technology. His passion for caring for others was deeply influenced by being raised by his grandmother, Rose, who played a significant role in shaping his compassionate approach to senior care.
Ian’s journey into nursing began with a powerful experience during a flight. A young boy suddenly stopped breathing, and panic spread throughout the cabin as the boy’s mother cried for help. A nurse on board calmly assessed the situation and confidently reassured the flight crew that she could handle it. After evaluating the child, she determined that the boy was diabetic and experiencing his first severe reaction. Through her quick thinking and professionalism, the boy regained consciousness. Witnessing that moment deeply inspired Ian. Just two months later, he enrolled in nursing school and eventually earned his ASN degree.
While volunteering during his studies, Ian realized how much elderly individuals benefit from attentive, compassionate care in a home-like environment. This realization led him to pursue work in adult family home care, where he could provide the respect, patience, and dignity seniors deserve.
Ian’s background in the United States Marine Corps, combined with his close relationship with his grandmother, shaped his calm, patient, and disciplined approach to caregiving. These qualities help him create a safe and supportive environment for residents at the Main House of Family’s Choice Care Adult Family Home.
Over the years, Ian has volunteered and gained experience in various healthcare settings, including adult family homes, nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, and the emergency department at Harborview Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center serving four states. He has been involved with Family’s Choice Care since it first opened in December 2015 and became the owner in May 2023. Ian also plans to continue his education and complete his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) by 2030.

Emmalyn Castillo, BSN, RN
Privately owned and operated, Family’s Choice Care Adult Family Home (2nd House) is managed by Emmalyn Castillo, a Registered Nurse who graduated from the University of the Cordilleras in the Philippines with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Emmalyn currently manages the second Family’s Choice Care Adult Family Home, where she oversees daily operations and ensures residents receive compassionate, high-quality, and personalized care. While the organization operates multiple homes under the same brand, each home is independently managed.
When Emmalyn first arrived in the United States, her family encouraged her to take time to pursue her nursing career. However, determined to support herself and build her future, she worked three different jobs, often sleeping only three to four hours each night. Despite the challenges, she remained dedicated to caring for others, believing that nursing plays a vital role in improving the quality of life and health of every client she serves.
With over a decade of experience since 2011, Emmalyn has worked in a wide range of healthcare settings including tertiary hospitals, community services, assisted living facilities, senior care homes, nursing homes, private nursing, and as an individual provider. These experiences strengthened her commitment to senior care and ultimately led her to help manage and operate an Adult Family Home.
Through Family’s Choice Care Adult Family Home, Emmalyn strives to create a warm and safe environment where residents feel respected, comfortable, and cared for like family. The home focuses on providing affordable, high-quality care tailored to each resident’s unique needs, preferences, and health conditions.
